Quick Start
Ready to visit? Here's your immediate action.
- Arrive one day before — rest first, do not visit the temple on the same day as travel
- Bathe before 5:30 AM; enter only through the main eastern rajagopuram
- Sequence: Unnamalai Amman shrine first, then Arunachaleswarar sanctum, then Girivalam
- 7 days before: vegetarian diet + "Om Arunachaleshwaraya Namah" 108 times each morning
Step by step
Complete Protocol
10 steps · follow in sequence at the temple
Step 1
Pre-visit purification (7 days)
Begin a vegetarian diet 7 days before your visit. Avoid alcohol, non-vegetarian food, and sexual activity. Chant "Om Arunachaleshwaraya Namah" 108 times each morning. This is not optional — the Arunachala tradition requires a prepared body and mind for the darshan to penetrate deeply.
Step 2
Arrive before sunrise
Reach Tiruvannamalai at least one day before your planned temple visit. Spend the evening at Sri Ramanasramam in silence. Do not visit the temple the same day you arrive if you have travelled far — rest first.
Step 3
Sacred bath at sunrise
Bathe before 5:30 AM on the day of your main visit. Use clean, unscented water if possible. Offer a small prayer to Ganga Devi (even a symbolic sprinkling) before bathing. Wear clean traditional attire — dhoti or kurta for men, saree or salwar kameez for women.
Step 4
Enter through the eastern gopuram
Enter only through the main eastern rajagopuram. Do not enter through side entrances for your first visit. Pause at the threshold and fold your hands. Say inwardly: "I come to you as one carrying a burden. I ask for the grace to be freed of it." Then enter barefoot.
Step 5
Darshan at Unnamalai Amman
The Goddess must be visited before the main Shiva sanctum. Proceed to the Unnamalai Amman shrine. Offer flowers (preferably red or yellow). Ask for the grace to face what needs to be released. Sit quietly for 5 minutes after your offering.
Step 6
Main Arunachaleswarar darshan
Proceed to the Arunachaleswarar sanctum (Garbhagriha). The queue can be long — wait with patience as part of the practice. When in front of the lingam, close your eyes immediately after seeing the deity. See the image in your mind. Mentally speak the worry you have been carrying. Do not ask for specific outcomes — ask only for the burden to be lifted. Open your eyes and receive the lamp (aarti).
Step 7
Circumambulate the inner prakaram
Walk the inner corridor clockwise (pradakshina) 3 times after darshan. Do not talk during this walk. Keep your right hand toward the sanctum wall. If you experience emotion — grief, tears, relief — let it be. This is the purification working.
Step 8
Girivalam — the hill circumambulation
This is the centrepiece of the entire visit. The 14-km barefoot walk around Arunachala hill is done clockwise, starting from the main eastern gopuram. Allow 4–5 hours. Walk slowly and in silence. Do not use your phone for anything other than safety. The Arunachala tradition holds that each step of the Girivalam dissolves one unit of accumulated karma. For anxiety, you may silently repeat "Om Arunachalaya Namah" with each step. There are 8 lingam shrines along the path — pause at each.
Step 9
Sit on the hillside
After completing Girivalam, find a quiet spot on the northeast side of the hill (near the Skandashramam area). Sit for 20 minutes in complete silence. Do not meditate with effort — simply sit and receive. This is where the darshan settles into the nervous system.
Step 10
Post-visit practice (21 days)
For 21 days after your visit: chant "Om Arunachaleshwaraya Namah" 108 times daily, preferably at sunrise. Light a lamp (ghee or sesame oil) facing east each morning. Avoid news, arguments, and overstimulating environments. The Arunachala energy continues to work after you leave — the 21 days consolidate what was initiated at the temple.

Common questions
FAQ
Yes, but children under 5 should be carried for the full 14 km. There are no significant inclines on the main path — it is a flat circumambulation road. Carry sufficient water and light snacks. Start before 6 AM to complete before peak afternoon heat.
Tradition specifies barefoot for maximum benefit. The path is mostly flat stone and some road sections. If you have a medical condition preventing barefoot walking, thin-soled footwear is permissible. The intent matters more than rigid rule-following.
