The traditional ascent of Chamundi Hill via the 1,000 steps (Soppanamarga — the step path) is not merely exercise — it is a tapas. Each step is a unit of dedicated intention. As you climb, silently or softly chant: "Jai Chamundeshwari" with each step. At the 700th step, stop at the Nandikeshwara (the giant Nandi) and touch both feet of the statue with both hands. Pause here for 5 minutes in silence. The tradition holds that Nandi here acts as the gatekeeper who verifies your sincerity before you proceed to the Goddess. Continue the remaining 300 steps to the summit.

At the summit, buy from the authorized vendors: (1) Red hibiscus garland — the Goddess's primary flower (Jaswand/Hibiscus is her signature; she is always decorated in red), (2) Red kumkum packet, (3) Coconut, (4) Camphor, (5) 9 betel leaves (representing the Navadurga — 9 forms of Durga), (6) A small packet of lemon and green chili (traditional evil-eye remedy offered to the Goddess). If you are seeking protection from a specific enemy: write that person's name on a small piece of paper — fold it inside one of the betel leaves as an offering.

At the archana counter, request the Chamundi Paada Puja (foot-worship of Chamundi). Give the priest your name and gotra. State clearly: "Shatru Nivaarana Puja" (enemy-removal puja) or "Raksha Archana" (protection archana). The priest will perform a specific set of 108 names invoking Chamundeshwari in her destroyer-of-enemies aspect — names like Mahishasuramardini (slayer of the buffalo demon), Ripunivarani (remover of enemies), Shatrudhvamsini (destroyer of enemies), Vighnakari Nasha (remover of obstacle-makers). During this archana, hold the folded betel leaf with the enemy's name in your right hand pressed against your heart.

After the archana, join the queue for the inner sanctum darshan. When you reach the sanctum and see the Goddess, look at the Mahisha (demon) under her feet. This demon symbolizes every enemy, internal and external, that is beneath the Goddess's authority — which is everything. State your enemy's name (or the nature of the threat) aloud in a whisper as you hold the darshan. The Goddess's left foot rests on Mahisha — this is the operative image for your petition: the specific enemy comes under her left foot. Hold this visualization for the full duration of your darshan.

Perform 3 full circumambulations of the temple complex (not just the inner sanctum — the full outer wall). During the first pradakshina: recite "Om Aim Hreem Kleem Chamundayai Viche" (the Navarna Mantra — the Devi's root mantra). During the second: walk in silence, visualizing a shield of red fire forming around yourself, your family, and your property. During the third: express gratitude — the protection has been activated; you are thanking the Goddess for what she has already set in motion.

At the camphor-burning station outside the temple (or at any open flame space near the exit), burn the folded betel leaf with the enemy's name. As it burns, say: "This name and the harm attached to it is surrendered to Chamundeshwari. May the Goddess deal with it according to her wisdom." Do not watch the ash — turn away and leave. Do not retrieve any remnant. This act transfers the "handling" of the situation to the Goddess — a deliberate release of your personal involvement in the conflict energy.

Collect the prasad: sweet pongal, coconut pieces, and kumkum. Apply the red kumkum from Chamundeshwari to the exact center of your forehead (not tilak style — the full Goddess kumkum mark is applied with the ring finger in a circular motion, slightly larger than a normal bindi). This is the Goddess's protection seal for the day. The tradition holds that no adverse energy can cross this seal while it remains on the skin.

For 11 days after your visit: (1) Light a single camphor flame each morning, recite "Om Aim Hreem Kleem Chamundayai Viche" 108 times. (2) Apply the Chamundeshwari kumkum to your forehead each day before leaving home. (3) Do not speak of the enemy situation to anyone during these 11 days — the practice requires silence around the specific conflict. (4) On the 11th day, go to any running water (river, stream, or even a tap) and release 9 red hibiscus flowers into it — one for each Navadurga — as the completion offering. The protection is now considered sealed for a period of one year.
