Step by step

Complete Protocol

6 steps · follow in sequence at the temple

Step 1

The Vijayadasami visit — the annual knowledge reset

Vijayadasami (Dussehra — the 10th day of Navaratri) is the single most powerful day in the year for any knowledge-related prayer at Koothanur. Over 1.5 million devotees visit during the 10-day Navaratri period. On Vijayadasami specifically, the Goddess is fully awakened in all her sovereign power — this is the day when all weapons, vehicles, instruments, books, and tools are blessed (Ayudha Puja) and when the new academic cycle begins (Vidyarambham). Plan your annual visit to Koothanur on Vijayadasami whenever possible. If Koothanur is too crowded (it often is), do the puja there on the closest available Pournami (full moon) with the same protocols.
Step 2

Prepare the Saraswathi offering set

Prepare the following offering set before visiting: (1) All textbooks, reference books, and notes relevant to the exam/goal. (2) The exam hall ticket or registration printout (if available). (3) Any instruments related to your goal (stethoscope for a medical student, calculator for CA/engineering, pencils and drawing instruments for design students). (4) A yellow cloth or yellow envelope to place these items in during the puja — yellow is Saraswathi's color. These items will be placed at the Goddess's feet for the priest to bless.
Step 3

The Akshara Abhyasam / Vidyarambham — first-writing ceremony

If visiting with a young child for the first-writing ceremony (Vidyarambham): inform the temple staff in advance, as specific priests are designated for this ritual. The child is made to write the letters "Hari Shri Ganapathaye Namaha" (Sanskrit), or "Hari Shri" in Tamil, with a gold ring on a bed of rice placed on a wooden plank (Palakai). The first stroke is guided by the priest, then by the grandfather (paternal), then by the father. This ceremony establishes the child's formal relationship with Saraswathi — she is the primary teacher from this moment. For adult students: visit the Goddess with your textbooks and have the priest perform Vidyarambham for a new academic phase (entrance to a new institution, beginning UPSC preparation, starting a CA articleship).

Step 4

The Saraswathi Homam — for high-stakes examinations

Book the Saraswathi Homam at least 2 days in advance through the temple office. The Homam (fire ritual) takes 2–3 hours. The specific Saraswathi Homam at Koothanur is performed with white sesame seeds, honey, ghee, and dried lotus petals — each representing aspects of cognitive intelligence (sesame = retention, honey = sweetness of knowledge, ghee = clarity, lotus = mental openness). The Homam culminates in the priest reciting the Saraswathi Moola Mantra ("Om Aim Saraswatyai Namaha") 1,008 times into the fire. The ash (Bhasma) from this Homam is given as prasad — mix a small pinch with honey and consume on each exam morning.

Step 5

Book blessing ritual — the consecration of study materials

At the main sanctum, arrange the books, instruments, and exam documents in front of the Goddess. The priest places them at the Goddess's feet and recites the Saraswathi Stotras while applying vibhuti (sacred ash) and kumkum to each item. The items return to you as consecrated study materials. The tradition holds that books touched by Saraswathi's grace are absorbed more efficiently by the mind — this is not superstition but reflects the devotional attitude toward knowledge as sacred that activates deep learning states. Take these books home and keep them in a clean, organized space — do not throw them on the floor or treat them carelessly.

Step 6

40-day Saraswathi practice — the mind restructuring protocol

Beginning from the day of the temple visit, for 40 consecutive days: (1) Each morning, before opening any book: bow three times before a Saraswathi image (or the blessed books) and recite "Om Aim Saraswatyai Namaha" 21 times. (2) Keep your study space clean and organized — disorder is the enemy of Saraswathi's presence. (3) Begin each study session by reading 5–10 pages of a non-curriculum book (literature, history, science — any genuine knowledge) — this feeds the Saraswathi energy of broad intellectual curiosity. (4) Do not study after 10 PM for the 40-day period — Saraswathi's energy is most active in the Brahma Muhurta (4–6 AM) and the morning hours. (5) On each Friday during the 40 days, offer a fresh white flower (lotus or jasmine) to any Saraswathi image and recite the Saraswathi Ashtottara (108 names).
