- Best day: Skanda Sashti (Oct–Nov) or Tuesday — arrive by 6 AM for first puja
- Bring patient photograph if they cannot attend

- Prasad: Panchamirtham — patient should consume even a small portion; apply theertham to patient's spine
Step by step
Complete Protocol
7 steps · follow in sequence at the temple
Step 1
Understand the Siddha framework for neurological disease
Write the patient's name, the neurological condition (tremors, memory loss, paralysis, stroke effects, nerve damage), and whether it primarily affects movement and restlessness or sensation, strength, and mobility. Place the patient's photograph in your home puja area with a lit lamp before Murugan's image. Continue all prescribed medical treatment — this protocol supports neurological healing alongside medical care.
Step 2
Family pre-visit preparation — 7 days
For 7 days before the temple visit: (1) The person affected (or family if the patient cannot participate) begins Murugan's mantra — "Om Saravanabavaya Namaha" — 108 times each morning. (2) Avoid tamasic foods: no meat, alcohol, or excess salt. (3) Begin applying warm sesame oil (Til oil) to the crown of the patient's head for 5–10 minutes each morning — sesame oil is the primary Vata-pacifying carrier in Siddha medicine. (4) If the patient has a photograph, place it in your home puja area with a lit lamp before Murugan's image. This 7-day preparation integrates the family's devotional energy with the patient's healing intention.
Step 3
Choose the visit day — Skanda Sashti or Tuesday
The most powerful day for neurological healing at Swamimalai: Skanda Sashti (the 6th day of Karthigai month, October–November), which is the day of Murugan's victory over the demon Soorapadman. The 6-day Skanda Sashti festival at Swamimalai draws hundreds of thousands. Next best: any Tuesday (day of Mars, which governs neurological assertiveness in the Siddha system). Also auspicious: Karthigai Deepam (the lamp festival of the Tamil month Karthigai). Plan your visit to coincide with one of these days.
Step 4
Arrive at the first aarti — Thiruvanandal
Arrive at Swamimalai for the first morning puja (Thiruvanandal) at 6:00 AM. The east-facing deity at Swamimalai receives the first light of the sun directly in the morning — this east-facing orientation is unique among the six Murugan abodes and is specifically associated with the activation of the solar energy in the nervous system (the Pingala nadi). Stand facing east, along with the deity, during the aarti. Feel the morning sun on the back of your head as the deity receives it on his face.
Step 5
The Vel Puja — central ritual for neurological healing
Book the Vel Puja (worship of Murugan's spear, the vel) at the temple counter. The vel is the specific attribute of Murugan associated with the sushumna nadi — the central nerve channel of Siddha anatomy that runs through the spine. When the vel is worshipped and its energy invoked, the tradition holds that the central nervous system's subtle pathway is activated and cleansed. State your specific petition to the priest: the name of the person affected, the condition (Parkinson's, stroke, memory loss, nerve damage), and the prayer: "Vel Murugan Thirupatham Pol Vaazhka" (May we live by the grace of the Lord's vel). If the patient cannot be present, bring a photograph.
Step 6
Offer vilva leaves and panchamirtham — the Vata-pacifying sequence
After the Vel Puja, purchase 108 vilva leaves (available from vendors outside the temple) and a quantity of panchamirtham (the sacred five-ingredient mixture — banana, jaggery, honey, ghee, cardamom). Offer the 108 vilva leaves at the Lord's feet, one by one, reciting "Om Saravanabavaya Namaha" with each leaf. Vilva leaves are among the most powerful Vata-pacifying substances in Siddha medicine. The panchamirtham prasad, after being offered, should be consumed by the patient (even a small portion if they cannot eat normally) — the five ingredients each correspond to one of the five Vata sub-types and pacify them collectively.
Step 7
The 48-day post-visit neurological practice
For 48 days after the temple visit (48 = the Murugan number in Tamil tradition, connected to the 48 Siddha texts): (1) Apply warm sesame oil to the crown of the patient's head each morning for 10 minutes before bathing. (2) Recite "Om Saravanabavaya Namaha" 108 times before the first meal of the day. (3) Light a camphor flame before Murugan's image on every Tuesday and on the 6th day (Sashti) of each lunar fortnight. (4) Maintain the dietary discipline: no processed foods, no excess salt, no tamasic foods. On day 48, light 48 lamps in a row (deepam) before Murugan's image at home, symbolizing the completion of the first healing cycle. Then begin a new 48-day cycle if needed.

Common questions
FAQ
Yes, as a complementary practice — not as a replacement for dopaminergic medication. The tradition at Swamimalai addresses the subtle (pranic) dimension of neurological decline. Families report that consistent practice reduces the anxiety and emotional distress around neurological disease, which itself reduces Vata aggravation. Some report subjective improvement in tremor frequency at specific times. None of this is clinical evidence — but the practice is safe, supportive, and beneficial regardless of the stage of the disease.
Yes — family members can perform the puja on behalf of the patient. Bring a clear photograph and give the patient's name to the priest. The entire puja is performed with the patient's name as the beneficiary. The panchamirtham prasad and the vilva-leaf prasad should be brought home for the patient.
