Step by step
Complete Protocol
6 steps · follow in sequence at the temple
Step 1
Understand Chevvai Dosham and when it applies
Consult a Jyotisha to confirm Mars affliction: Chevvai Dosham occurs when Mars occupies the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house from the ascendant, moon, or Venus. Also check whether you are currently in Mars dasha (the 7-year period). Write your nakshatra, rashi, and the specific pattern you are experiencing — conflict, marriage obstacle, repeated accidents, or financial loss from hasty action — before visiting.
Step 2
Visit on Tuesday — the Mars day — consistently
Tuesday (Mangalvaar in Sanskrit, Chevvai Kizhama in Tamil) is ruled by Mars and is the most powerful day for Mars pacification. At Thirumangalakudi, Tuesday morning pujas are attended by Jyotisha practitioners who specifically perform the Chevvai Shanti (Mars pacification) ritual. Plan to visit on at least 6 consecutive Tuesdays for a complete Mars-pacification course. One visit is sufficient for mild Chevvai Dosham or for auspiciousness restoration after temporary bad luck. Six consecutive Tuesday visits is the prescription for severe Chevvai Dosham (Mars in 7th house causing marriage obstacles, or Mars dasha with multiple simultaneous problems).
Step 3
The Chevvai Puja — red flowers, red lentils, copper vessel
Book the Chevvai Puja at the temple counter. The specific offerings for this puja: (1) Red flowers — 9 red hibiscus (Mandara) or red lotus (the number 9 is Mars's number). (2) Red lentils (Toor dal) — 250 grams. (3) A copper vessel (Mars rules copper) — available from vendors near the temple. (4) Red cloth — one meter. These items are offered to Mangalanathar specifically for Mars pacification. The priest performs the puja and returns the copper vessel (now consecrated) — keep it in your home puja area and use it for offering water to the sun each morning (Surya Arghya) for 48 days after the temple visit.
Step 4
The Mangalambika shrine — auspiciousness restoration
After the Chevvai Puja at the main Mangalanathar shrine, proceed to the Mangalambika (Goddess) shrine. Mangalambika is Shiva's consort in her "auspiciousness" form — she is the active field of auspiciousness, not the passive. Offer red kumkum (vermilion) and red lotus flowers at her feet. State clearly: "Mangalambika Amma, [name]'s life is restored to auspiciousness. The obstacles are dissolved and the path is cleared." The Goddess shrine at Thirumangalakudi is specifically powerful for women experiencing Mars-related obstacles: delayed marriage, marital conflicts (especially where the husband has Mars affliction), and aggressive female Mars (women in Mars dasha who are experiencing their own intensity as destructive).
Step 5
Navagraha — the Chevvai (Mars) shrine focus
Most large Shiva temples have a Navagraha shrine. At Thirumangalakudi, locate the Navagraha complex and specifically approach the Chevvai (Mars) deity. Mars in the Navagraha complex is typically depicted in red, holding weapons, facing south. Offer: 9 red flowers, 9 units of red lentils, and light a red lamp (a lamp with red oil or a standard lamp with a small red cloth wick, available from temple vendors). Recite the Chevvai beej mantra 27 times: "Om Kram Krim Kraum Sah Bhaumaya Namah" (phonetic: Om Kram Kreem Krowm Sa Bho-ma-ya Na-ma-ha). 27 times = one Navagraha cycle (3 × 9).
Step 6
48-day Mars-pacification daily practice
For 48 days after the temple visit: (1) Each morning at sunrise: offer water from the consecrated copper vessel to the rising sun (Surya Arghya) — hold the vessel at chest height, face east, pour the water slowly in an arc in front of the sun, and recite "Om Suryaya Namaha" 9 times. This practice draws on the Sun-Mars relationship: Mars is the commander of the Sun's army in Jyotisha — pacifying Mars through the Sun is the most elegant remedial pathway. (2) On each Tuesday of the 48 days: repeat the Chevvai Puja at home — red flowers, red lentils, copper vessel, 27 repetitions of the Chevvai beej mantra. (3) Avoid initiating new confrontations or aggressive actions during these 48 days — the Mars energy is being pacified, not suppressed, and cooperating with this by choosing peace over conflict accelerates the process.

Common questions
FAQ
Marriage delay due to Chevvai Dosham is among the most common applications of the Thirumangalakudi Mangalanathar puja. The Mars affliction in the 7th house specifically creates obstacles to marriage compatibility. The 6-Tuesday Chevvai Puja course, combined with the Mangalambika Goddess puja for the bride herself, is the traditional remedy. Additionally, the tradition recommends: matching horoscopes specifically for the Mars house positions, and seeking a partner who also has Chevvai Dosham (Mars-Mars compatibility is one of the remedial marriage patterns in Tamil Jyotisha).
Mangal Ashtami refers to a Tuesday that falls on the 8th lunar day (Ashtami). This combination is exceptionally auspicious for Mars worship — the 8th lunar day is connected to the fierce aspect of Shiva (Ashtamurti — the 8-formed Shiva) and Tuesday is Mars day. When these align, the Chevvai Puja has its maximum potency. These combinations occur approximately 3–4 times per year — consult a Panchangam to identify the next occurrence.
