Arulmigu Brahaspatheeswara Abadhsahayeswarar Temple

Deity Lord Shiva (Brahaspatheeswara, Guru Sthalam), Goddess Brahannayaki

Arulmigu Brahaspatheeswara Temple at Alangudi (Papanasam) is the designated Rasi temple for Kataka Rasi (Cancer) and the supreme Navagraha temple for Guru (Jupiter) in Tamil Nadu. The presiding deity Shiva here is worshipped as Brahaspatheeswara — "Lord Worshipped by Brahaspati (Jupiter)" — reflecting the unique tradition that Guru (Jupiter/Brahaspati) himself is said to have worshipped Shiva here to gain relief from a curse. This makes Alangudi the definitive Guru Dosha remedy temple and a pilgrimage site for those seeking all Guru-related blessings: wealth, wisdom, spiritual progress, marriage, children, and good fortune. Goddess Brahannayaki here is worshipped specifically for santhana bhagya (blessing for children) and is among the most visited Goddess shrines in the Kaveri belt for those seeking to conceive.

Devotional tradition

Ritual & Significance

Alangudi is the Kataka Rasi sthalam and the definitive Guru Sthalam. Jupiter rules dharma, spiritual wisdom, wealth, progeny (children), marriage fortune, and the teacher-student relationship. When Guru is weak, debilitated (in Capricorn), or passing through challenging transits, the effects are wide-ranging: obstacles to marriage, delays in having children, financial struggles despite effort, loss of faith and direction. The signature ritual here is Guru Puja on Thursdays (Guru Kilamai) — the day of Jupiter. Devotees offer yellow flowers (especially marigold), yellow cloth (paavadai), chana dal (yellow gram), and perform a 108-archana to Brahaspatheeswara. The critical visit for childless couples is the Santhana Gopala Puja offered to Goddess Brahannayaki on Thursdays. The unique power of this temple: Guru himself did his tapas here — so the shakti for granting what Guru governs (wisdom, abundance, children) is exceptionally concentrated.
