Arulmigu Mahalingaswamy Temple

Deity Lord Shiva (Mahalingaswamy, Koormanadar), Goddess Kokilambika

Arulmigu Mahalingaswamy Temple at Tiruvidaimarudur (also called Madhyarjuna Kshetram β€” the Middle Arjuna Shrine) is the Simha Rasi temple (Leo) and is presided over by Surya (the Sun) as its Navagraha deity. Located on the southern bank of the Kaveri near Kumbakonam, this ancient temple is one of the Paadal Petra Sthalams and is known as a Shiva temple where the Sun god himself is said to have worshipped the lingam to overcome a curse. Surya devotees, those with weak or afflicted Sun in their horoscope, those experiencing Surya Mahadasha, and Simha Rasi natives perform special rituals here. The Mahalinga (great lingam) in the sanctum is among the largest naturally occurring lingams in South India, and the temple tank Vedavarni Theertham is considered especially sacred.

Ritual & Significance

Tiruvidaimarudur is the Simha Rasi sthalam and the Surya Sthalam (Sun temple) in the Navagraha system. The Sun governs authority, health (vitality), self-confidence, the father, government careers, and the right eye. When the Sun is weak or afflicted β€” or during Surya Mahadasha and Surya Antardasha β€” people experience lack of confidence, health issues, conflicts with authority figures, government-related problems, and career stagnation. The remedy ritual here is Surya Puja on Sundays (Nyayiru), offering red lotus flowers, wheat, copper vessels, and red cloth. The auspicious timing is Surya Hora on Sunday β€” which falls at sunrise and specific windows through the day (calculated per panchangam). Devotees pour water on the Surya Yantra, perform Surya Namaskara (108 prostrations facing east), and seek Kokilambika's blessing for Saubhagya (marital happiness, as she is the ideal devoted wife).
