Arulmigu Panchanadeeswara Dharanipoosani Temple

Deity Lord Shiva (Panchanadeeswara, Kumbha Rasi Sthalam), Goddess Dharanipoosani

Arulmigu Panchanadeeswara Temple at Thiruvaiyaru (near Thanjavur) is the Kumbha Rasi temple (Aquarius) in the Tamil Nadu Rasi Sthalams system. Thiruvaiyaru is one of the most sacred Paadal Petra Sthalams — hymned by all the major Nayanmars — and the town is globally revered as the birthplace of Saint Thyagaraja, the great Carnatic music composer. The Lord here is Panchanadeeswara — the "Lord of the Five Rivers" — as Thiruvaiyaru is situated at the confluence of five tributaries of the Kaveri. Kumbha Rasi (Aquarius) is ruled by Saturn (Shani) in the Tamil Jyotish tradition, and Saturn-ruled individuals (Kumbha and Makara Rasi) find specific remedies at this temple. The Shani (Saturn) shrine here is particularly powerful for Sade Sati relief (the 7.5-year Saturn transit). Goddess Dharanipoosani is worshipped for protection and for women seeking fertility and long marital life.

Devotional tradition

Ritual & Significance

Thiruvaiyaru is the Kumbha Rasi sthalam with Shani (Saturn) as the presiding Navagraha. Saturn governs: discipline, karma, hard work, longevity, property, servant class, agriculture, and justice. When Saturn is weak, debilitated, or in the feared Sade Sati transit (when Saturn transits the sign before, the sign of, and the sign after the natal Moon), the effects are: heavy burdens, delayed results, health issues (bones, joints, teeth), career obstacles, disputes, and a general heaviness of spirit. The Shani Puja ritual here is performed on Saturdays in the sesame oil (ellu ennai) tradition — a lamp is lit with sesame oil, black sesame seeds and black cloth are offered, and a Shani Yantra is worshipped. The unique shakti of Thiruvaiyaru: being at the confluence of five rivers (Kaveri, Vennar, Kudamurutti, Vennaru, Koradam) amplifies the purifying power — Panchasnana (bathing at the five-river confluence) is believed to remove even the heaviest karmic Saturn burdens.
