Arulmigu Swetaranyeswarar Brahmavidyambika Temple

Deity Lord Shiva (Swetaranyeswarar, Budha Sthalam), Goddess Brahmavidyambika

Arulmigu Swetaranyeswarar Temple at Thiruvenkadu (near Sirkazhi in the Kaveri delta) is the designated Rasi temple for Mithuna Rasi (Gemini) and the principal Navagraha temple for Budhan (Mercury). This ancient Divya Kshetram is among the 276 Paadal Petra Sthalams and holds the rare distinction of being the Budha Sthalam — the foremost Mercury shrine in Tamil Nadu Shaivism. The presiding Navagraha here is Budhan (Mercury), and Shiva is worshipped as Swetaranyeswarar — "Lord of the White Forest" — the forest of white Vanni trees (Prosopis cineraria) that once surrounded this delta region. Those born under Mithuna Rasi, those with Budha Dosha (Mercury affliction), and students/business professionals seeking Mercury's blessings for communication, intellect, commerce, and success in studies visit this temple.

Ritual & Significance

Thiruvenkadu is among the most important of the nine Navagraha temples for those with Mercury affliction. Budha (Mercury) rules intelligence, speech, communication, commerce, analytical ability, and health of the nervous system. When Mercury is weak, debilitated, or afflicted in the birth chart: communication problems, business losses, learning disabilities (especially in languages), nervous disorders, and speech impediments manifest. The prescribed ritual is Budha Puja on Wednesdays (Budha Kilamai — Mercury's day), offering green vegetables, green moong (whole moong), and green flowers. The temple's unique Navagraha shrine has Budhan positioned with his own sub-shrine (called Budha Sannidhi) — more elaborate than at standard Navagraha temples. The theertham (sacred tank) here is called Brahma Theertham, and abhishekam to Swetaranyeswarar using milk and bilva leaves is the core Mercury-remedy ritual.
