Thiruparankundram Murugan Temple
Thiruparankundram is the first of the six sacred abodes of Murugan (Arupadaiveedu) and one of the oldest rock-cut temples in South India, carved into a granite hill near Madurai. This is where Murugan married Deivayanai (Indra's daughter) after his victory over the demon Soorapadman. The cave temple predates the Pallava period and contains shrines to multiple deities carved into the natural rock. In Siddha tradition, Thiruparankundram Murugan governs nerve restoration, post-injury neurological recovery, and spine-related conditions.
Ritual & Significance
The first of the six abodes (Arupadaiveedu) makes Thiruparankundram the primary foundation of the Murugan circuit for neurological healing. The cave temple is unique in having shrines to Murugan, Shiva, Vishnu, and Ganesha carved into the same rock โ representing the integrated divine field for complete healing. Prescribed ritual for neurological conditions: Vel Puja with 108 vilva leaves offered on a Tuesday. The Kavadi ritual here โ carrying a decorated kavadi up the 272 steps carved into the hill โ is specifically associated with spine and nerve petitions. The Soora Samharam (victory over Soorapadman) festival in Skanda Sashti is a particularly powerful time for neurological healing intentions.
