Arulmigu Viratteswarar Temple

Deity Lord Shiva (Viratteswarar, Bhairavar), Goddess Komalavalli

Thiruvadigai Viratteswarar Temple is the presiding Rasi temple for Mesha Rasi (Aries). Shiva here is worshipped as Viratteswarar — the Terrific Lord — and the presiding Navagraha is Chevvai (Mars/Mangal), the ruling planet of Aries. It is among the 276 Paadal Petra Sthalams (Shiva temples hymned by the Nayanmars) in the Chola-era tradition. The temple features one of the largest temple complexes in Tamil Nadu, with nine prakaras (enclosing walls). Devotees born under Mesha Rasi or those with afflicted Mars in their horoscope visit here for Mars-related doshas including Kuja Dosha, Mangal Dosha (affecting marriage), and Chevvai Dosha. The temple's tank (Brahma Theertham) is sacred for ritualistic ablutions.

Ritual & Significance

Viratteswarar Temple is the Mesha Rasi sthalam — the cosmic pillar temple for those born when the Moon was in Aries. Mars (Chevvai/Mangal) rules Mesha Rasi, and worship here specifically addresses: Kuja Dosha (which delays marriage), Manglik Dosha effects, excessive aggression or accidents caused by Mars affliction, and career obstructions linked to weak Mars. The core ritual for Mesha Rasi natives is the Chevvai Puja — performed on Tuesdays (Chevvai Kilamai), which is Mars's day. Devotees offer red flowers (especially red oleander and hibiscus), red rice (Arisi with red gram), and light 9 deepams (oil lamps) for the Navagrahas in the prescribed sequence beginning with Chevvai.
