- Best day: Thursday or Amavasya — Agasthya Jayanti (Aadi, July–Aug) is the annual peak
- Collect Homam ash (Bhasma) on the day — mix pinch with honey, consume on empty stomach for 48 mornings
- Sanctum mudra: Both palms at throat level facing the Lingam, fingers up — hold 3–5 minutes with "Om Namah Shivaya"
Step by step
Complete Protocol
6 steps · follow in sequence at the temple
Step 1
Understand Agasthya's approach to thyroid disease
Book the Agasthya Homam at least 2 days before your visit — call the temple office to confirm the next scheduled Homam date and reserve your place. The ash (Bhasma) from this fire ritual is the primary healing prasad for thyroid and metabolic conditions and must be collected on the day of the ceremony. If possible, plan the visit for a Thursday or Amavasya (new moon) for maximum effect; Agasthya Jayanti (Tamil month Aadi, July–August) is the annual peak.
Step 2
Plan the visit on Agasthya Jayanti — the most powerful day
Agasthya Jayanti is the birth anniversary of Sage Agasthya, observed in the Tamil month of Aadi (July–August) on a specific tithi each year (check with the temple or a Panchangam). On this day, the Agasthya Homam is performed with maximum elaborateness and the healing energy of the temple is at its annual peak. If Agasthya Jayanti is not possible, visit on any Thursday (Thursday is the day of Jupiter — Guru — who governs the teacher-sages and the endocrine system in Jyotisha) or on the new moon (Amavasya — the day of the deepest energetic reset).
Step 3
The Agasthya Homam — the herbal-fire thyroid ritual
Book the Agasthya Homam at the temple in advance (minimum 2 days ahead). The Homam is performed with a specific list of herbs that correspond to Agasthya's botanical tradition — the priest will compile the herb bundle in advance. The fire ritual lasts 2–3 hours. The ash (Bhasma) from this Homam is the most important prasad: mixed with honey and consumed on an empty stomach each morning for 48 days, this is the traditional Siddha thyroid support preparation. The Homam fire also activates the Agastheeswarar Lingam — after the Homam, the Lingam is bathed and the theertham is collected for the devotee. Theertham application: apply a small amount to the throat (the thyroid zone) externally each morning.
Step 4
The neck-zone activation — the throat meridian practice
At the sanctum, face the Agastheeswarar Lingam directly. Hold both hands at the throat level, palms facing the Lingam, fingers pointing up. This mudra (hand position) directs the temple's pranic field toward the throat (Vishuddha chakra — the energy center corresponding to the thyroid gland in yogic anatomy). Hold this position for 3–5 minutes while reciting internally: "Om Namah Shivaya" (the 5-syllable mantra — one syllable for each of the 5 throat elements). This practice is documented in Agasthya's Kundalini yoga texts as the specific throat chakra activation for Kandam Noi. The priest will not interfere — this is an internal practice performed during regular darshan.
Step 5
Seek the Agasthya Siddha herb garden consultation
The temple vicinity has traditionally maintained a Siddha herb garden. If herbal practitioners are available (ask the temple office — availability varies by season and by which Siddha practitioners are currently in residence), seek a brief consultation about Agasthya's herbal recommendations for thyroid conditions. Key herbs in Agasthya's thyroid tradition: Kanchanara (Bauhinia variegata — most cited in Ayurvedic thyroid texts), Guggul (Commiphora wightii — stimulates thyroid function), Brahmi (Centella asiatica — supports the hypothalamus-pituitary-thyroid axis), and Shankhpushpi (Convolvulus pluricaulis — for hyperthyroid calming). Even if a practitioner is not available, these herbs can be sourced from reputable Siddha pharmacies in Kumbakonam or Chennai.
Step 6
48-day thyroid support practice — Agasthya's dietary-spiritual protocol
For 48 days after the temple visit: (1) Morning: Agasthya Homam ash (pinch) mixed with honey on empty stomach. (2) Apply theertham to the throat zone externally. (3) Recite "Om Agasthyaya Namaha" 108 times before breakfast. (4) Dietary rule from Agasthya's Siddha tradition: avoid goitrogenic vegetables (raw cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, kale) and increase iodine-rich foods (seaweed, iodized salt used moderately, sea fish if non-vegetarian). (5) On each Thursday of the 48 days: a brief Guru (Jupiter) puja at home — yellow flowers, turmeric water poured over a stone, 27 repetitions of "Om Brihaspathaye Namaha." Jupiter governs the master-sages (including Agasthya) and the pituitary-thyroid axis in Jyotisha.

Common questions
FAQ
Yes — hypothyroidism (Kapha-dominant thyroid suppression) is the primary condition within Agasthya's Kandam Noi tradition. The Agasthya herbs (Guggul particularly) are documented to have thyroid-stimulating properties in traditional medicine. The Agasthya Homam ash is indicated specifically for Kapha accumulation conditions. Continue thyroid medication (levothyroxine or equivalent) — the Siddha approach works at a different level and does not substitute for hormone replacement.
Yes — thyroid nodules and goiter are both classified as Kandam Noi in Agasthya's tradition. They represent physical Kapha accumulation in the thyroid tissue. The Kanchanara herb from the Agasthya tradition is specifically documented in classical texts for thyroid nodule reduction. Continue medical monitoring of nodules (ultrasound follow-up with your endocrinologist) alongside this practice.
