Quick Start
Ready to visit? Here's your immediate action.
- Best time: Pradosha evening (13th lunar day) — setting sun and rising moon meet simultaneously
- Climb 272 steps at steady pace — recite "Shiva-Shakti Samarasam" with each step, arrive composed
- Book: Coconut Milk Abhishekam — bring written petition with patient name, condition, and prayer
- Offer: Equal yellow flowers (solar/Shiva) and white flowers (lunar/Parvati) — equal quantity is the ritual statement
Step by step
Complete Protocol
6 steps · follow in sequence at the temple
Step 1
Understand the masculine-feminine framework for hormonal disease
Identify the specific hormonal condition being addressed — PCOS, hypothyroid, hyperthyroid, or estrogen imbalance — and write it on a piece of white paper along with current symptoms. This written statement becomes your petition for the temple visit. If a medical diagnosis has been confirmed, note it; if not yet diagnosed, describe the symptoms in two or three honest sentences.
Step 2
Plan the visit on Pradosha day — the most powerful timing
Pradosha is the 13th lunar day (Trayodashi) of each fortnight, in both the waxing and waning moon cycles. The Pradosha evening (approximately 1.5 hours before sunset to 1 hour after sunset) is the most powerful time for any Shiva puja and especially for Ardhanariswarar worship. At Tiruchengode, the Pradosha puja is renowned — the hill-top Ardhanariswarar receives the setting sun (the solar-masculine energy) and the rising moon (the lunar-feminine energy) simultaneously during the Pradosha window — this cosmic event is the perfect visible metaphor for the hormonal balance the puja addresses.
Step 3
The 272-step ascent — a physical declaration of intention
The climb up the 272 red laterite steps to the Ardhanariswarar temple is an intentional physical act. The number 272 is significant: 2+7+2 = 11 = the number of Rudras (Shiva's fierce forms). Climb the steps at a steady, unhurried pace. With each step, internally repeat: "Shiva-Shakti Samarasam" (the equal harmony of Shiva and Shakti). Do not rush — the tradition holds that arriving breathless at the sanctum scatters the intention. Arrive composed. Women managing menstrual conditions may find this climb physically challenging — pace appropriately and carry water. The physical effort of the climb itself is the first offering.
Step 4
The coconut milk abhishekam — fertility and hormonal restoration
At the sanctum, arrange for a Coconut Milk Abhishekam (Thenneer Abishekam). Fresh coconut water and coconut milk are poured over the Ardhanariswarar linga in sequence. In Siddha medicine, coconut water is cooling and balancing to both Pitta and Vata — the two doshas involved in most hormonal disorders. Coconut milk specifically nourishes the Shukra dhatu (reproductive tissue). As the abhishekam is performed, the devotee (or family member) holds a written petition (on a piece of white paper) stating: the woman's name, the specific condition, and the prayer: "Ardhanariswarar arul palika — [name]'s hormonal balance restored." Place this paper at the Lord's feet for the duration of the abhishekam.
Step 5
Offer half-yellow, half-white flowers — the gender-balance offering
After the abhishekam, make a special offering: equal numbers of yellow flowers (representing Shiva's solar energy — turmeric-colored marigolds are ideal) and white flowers (representing Parvati's lunar energy — jasmine or white lotus). The equal quantity is the ritual statement: "May the masculine and feminine within [name]'s body be equal and harmonious." Give these flowers to the priest and state the petition. At Tiruchengode specifically, the priests are trained to perform the Ardhanariswarar balance-puja with this offering.
Step 6
3-month lunar-cycle hormonal healing practice
Begin the day of the temple visit and continue for 3 complete lunar months: (1) On new moon (Amavasya): Fast on fruits and water. Light a white lamp. Recite "Om Ardhanariswaraya Namaha" 108 times. This establishes the lunar (feminine) reset. (2) On full moon (Pournami): Consume a small quantity of cow's milk with honey and turmeric (the Chandra-Shiva combination). Light a ghee lamp. This establishes the solar-lunar balance point. (3) On Pradosha (13th day, both fortnights): Repeat a mini-version of the temple visit at home — abhishekam of a Shiva linga with coconut water, equal yellow and white flowers, the petition recited. After 3 complete lunar cycles (approximately 3 months), the tradition holds that the prana (subtle life-energy) governing the endocrine system has been sufficiently reorganized for the body's own healing to accelerate.

Common questions
FAQ
Yes — PCOS in Siddha medicine is a Pitta-Vata dual aggravation condition where excess androgenic (masculine) energy dominates over the feminine-receptive energy. Ardhanariswarar worship is the direct devotional antidote to this specific imbalance. The lunar-cycle practice described works on the hormonal rhythm — the waxing/waning cycle of the moon directly maps to the hormonal cycle of the female body. Consistent practice for 3 months alongside lifestyle changes (Siddha diet, reduced refined sugar) has shown benefit in the tradition for PCOS-related menstrual irregularity.
Yes — both hypothyroid (insufficient fire energy) and hyperthyroid (excess fire energy) are within the scope of Ardhanariswarar healing, as both involve solar (fire) energy imbalance relative to the lunar (cooling) energy. Hypothyroid: the practice emphasizes the Shiva-solar aspects — visit on Sundays, focus on the Shiva half of the deity. Hyperthyroid: emphasize the Parvati-lunar aspects — visit on Mondays, focus on the Goddess half.
