Quick Start
Ready to visit? Here's your immediate action.
  • Find your Gayawala first: Gayawala Samaj office near Vishnupad Temple — give state, district, village
  • Fast: From sunrise on your main Pinda Daan day — water permitted
  • Bath: Falgu River ghat — dig for water if dry; immerse 3 times facing south
  • Three sites: Vishnupad Temple → Falgu Ghat (Ramkund) → Akshayavat tree — all three required
Step by step

Complete Protocol

10 steps · follow in sequence at the temple

Step 1

Contact your Gayawala before travelling

Every family performing Gaya Shraddha has a hereditary Gayawala — a Brahmin priest whose family has served your ancestor's village for generations, maintaining a register of your family's previous Gaya visits going back centuries. Your grandparents or older relatives will know the family's Gayawala name. If you don't know: arrive in Gaya, go to the Gayawala Samaj office near the Vishnupad Temple, and give your state, district, and village of origin — they will identify your hereditary Gayawala. Using your family's own Gayawala is strongly preferred; the register they maintain makes the ritual lineage-specific.
Step 2

Fast on the day of the main puja

Fast from sunrise on the day of your main Pinda Daan. Water is permitted. Avoid non-vegetarian food for 3 days before your Gaya visit. The Gaya Shraddha tradition is specific: the body performing the ritual should be in a state of physical restraint that signals the sincerity of the offering. A pilgrim who has eaten a full non-vegetarian meal and then performed Pinda Daan is considered to have reduced the ritual's efficacy significantly.
Step 3

Falgu River bath

On arrival at Gaya, proceed directly to the Falgu River Ghat (Ramkund, 300m from the Vishnupad Temple). The Falgu often appears dry or nearly dry at the surface — bathe in the sandy riverbed, digging slightly to reach the flowing water underneath, or use the clean ghat water. Immerse yourself 3 times facing south (the direction of ancestors). Chant "Om Pitru Devaya Namah" with each immersion. Change into clean white or light-coloured traditional attire after bathing.

Vishnupad Temple darshan and sankalpam

Enter the Vishnupad Temple and proceed to the main shrine where Lord Vishnu's 40-cm footprint is embedded in solid black rock. Queue and touch the footprint (or receive a brief physical contact as the queue moves). After darshan, your Gayawala will perform the Sankalpam — the formal ritual vow — identifying you, your family lineage, your gotra, and the ancestors you have come to serve. Listen carefully and repeat the Sanskrit phrases as guided. The Sankalpam is the cosmic registration of your intent — it is not a formality.

Step 5

Pinda Daan at the Vishnupad sanctum precinct

The first Pinda Daan (of multiple sites) is performed in the precinct of the Vishnupad Temple itself. Your Gayawala prepares the pindas (rice balls) mixed with til, barley, honey, and kusha grass. You offer each pinda for a specific ancestor: paternal grandfather, paternal great-grandfather, and paternal great-great-grandfather (the primary three). For each: hold the pinda in both hands, name the ancestor as the Gayawala chants, then place it on the ground or stone slab designated by the priest. Do not rush — each offering requires a moment of genuine mental connection with the named ancestor.

Step 6

Falgu River bank Pinda Daan

After the temple, proceed to the Falgu River bank (Ramkund Ghat) for the second major Pinda Daan. Here, the offerings are made on the sandy riverbed — the ancestor receiving the offering is said to emerge briefly from the riverbed to receive it. This site is considered particularly powerful for ancestors who died away from home, far from family, or without proper last rites. A separate set of pindas is prepared for maternal ancestors here — paternal maternal grandfather, maternal grandmother, maternal great-grandfather (up to 3 maternal generations).

Step 7

Akshayavat Pinda Daan

The Akshayavat — the immortal banyan tree (500m from the main temple) — is the third and final primary Pinda Daan site in the condensed Gaya circuit. The tree is ancient, its exact age unknown. Pinda Daan here is said to be specifically for ancestors who have attained a state between living and liberation — those who have been released from gross suffering but have not yet attained full liberation. The offering here is the "completion" offering — acknowledging that the ancestors are being sent forward. After offering, take 3 pradakshinas (circumambulations) of the tree clockwise.

Step 8

Pretashila Hill visit (if needed)

Pretashila Hill (8 km from the Vishnupad Temple) is specifically for ancestors who died in traumatic circumstances — sudden death, violence, accidents, drowning, or those who died with intense fear or anger. If your family has such ancestors, the Pretashila visit is essential, not optional. The ritual here involves a specific mantra sequence chanted by the Gayawala while you pour water onto a designated stone. This releases what the tradition calls "preta gati" — the stuck, wandering state of those who died without completion.

Step 9

Brahmin bhojan (feeding the Gayawala)

After all Pinda Daan sites are completed, invite your Gayawala (and ideally 2–3 other Brahmins) for a meal. This is the Brahmin Bhojan — the feeding of the representative of the ancestors. The tradition holds that ancestors receive food through the mouths of Brahmins to whom it is offered on their behalf. This is not optional — a Gaya Shraddha without Brahmin Bhojan is incomplete. A clean, simple vegetarian meal is prepared or arranged. Give the Gayawala his dakshina (priest fee) after the meal.

Step 10

Post-Gaya Shraddha observance

For 30 days after Gaya Shraddha: light a sesame oil lamp facing south each evening. Offer water and a small amount of rice at an outdoor spot (not inside the house) on 3 consecutive Saturdays after your return. Give food to a crow, a cow, and a brahmin on the 3rd day after your return — the crow is specifically associated with pitruloka and is the traditional recipient of ancestral offerings. Then release the observance. The Gaya Shraddha tradition holds that the dosha release is permanent and the 30-day practice seals it.
