Quick Start
Ready to visit? Here's your immediate action.
  • Arrive the day before — evening Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh only, no ritual yet
  • Ganga bath: 4:45 AM pre-dawn at Dashashwamedh Ghat — 3 immersions facing upstream (east)
  • Tarpana immediately after: official ghat priest (dhotis at ghat steps from 4:30 AM), bring ancestor names and gotra
  • Pinda Daan: Manikarnika Ghat mid-morning + Akshayavat banyan tree — complete both sites
Step by step

Complete Protocol

10 steps · follow in sequence at the temple

Step 1

Confirm the signs of Pitru dosha (before travel)

Pitru dosha typically manifests as: repeated unexplained failures or reversals after apparent success, persistent health issues with no medical explanation, delayed or blocked marriage in the family, children not born or pregnancies not carried to term, unexplained conflict and fragmentation in the family, bad luck that appears just as things are about to improve. If 3 or more of these apply, Pitru dosha is the likely cause. Have your horoscope checked by a Jyotishi to confirm — specifically ask whether the 9th house (father, ancestors) or 5th house (progeny) is afflicted by Rahu, Saturn, or the Sun.
Step 2

Determine which ancestors need release

Before travelling, take time to recall all family members who have died — particularly those who died young, unexpectedly, in accidents or violence, who died with unfulfilled wishes, who had difficult relationships with the family, or whose last rites may not have been performed fully. Write their names. If names are not known, write "all ancestors on the paternal and maternal sides, known and unknown, going back seven generations." The priest at Kashi will use this list in the sankalpam.
Step 3

Arrive in Varanasi and orient yourself

Arrive in Varanasi the day before your main ritual day. Spend the evening simply walking the ghats — do not perform any ritual yet. Sit at a ghat and watch the Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh (6:30 PM). Let the city's energy land. Do not eat non-vegetarian food from the moment you arrive. Avoid alcohol. Sleep early and well — your main ritual begins before dawn.

Step 4

Pre-dawn Ganga bath at Dashashwamedh Ghat

Wake at 4:00 AM. Bathe in your accommodation first. Then proceed to Dashashwamedh Ghat by 4:45 AM. Descend the steps into the Ganga before sunrise — immerse yourself completely 3 times, each time facing the east (upstream direction). Do not use soap. Chant "Om Namah Gangayai Namah" with each immersion. The Ganga bath at pre-dawn is the purification that opens the channel for the ancestor ritual. Do not skip it — it is not optional in the Kashi tradition.

Step 5

Tarpana (water offering to ancestors)

Immediately after the Ganga bath, while still at the ghat, perform tarpana. A priest will approach you (they are present at Dashashwamedh from 4:30 AM) — engage one from the official ghat priest families (they wear dhotis and have a small workstation at the ghat steps). Give the priest your name, gotra, and the list of ancestors you prepared. The priest will guide you through the tarpana: cupping water from the Ganga in both hands, naming each ancestor or category, and releasing the water facing south (the direction of Yama, lord of ancestors) in a flowing stream. Do this with full concentration — see each ancestor being released from thirst and suffering as the water flows.

Step 6

Engage a Kashi Pandit for the full Pitru Shanti ritual

After tarpana, engage a proper Kashi Pandit (a hereditary priest specialist in Pitru rituals — not a temple priest) for the Pitru Shanti puja. Your hotel or a trusted recommendation can provide a name. The Pitru Shanti ritual involves: reading of the Pitru Suktam, specific havan (fire ritual) with til (sesame) and ghee offerings, chanting of the Pitru Tarpanam mantras for your specific gotra, and a final offering to the Akasha (sky/space) element on behalf of all ancestors. This ritual takes 2–3 hours and should be done at a specific riverside location the pandit will guide you to.

Step 7

Pinda Daan at Manikarnika Ghat

Proceed to Manikarnika Ghat (500m from Dashashwamedh) in the mid-morning. This is the primary cremation ghat — burning 24 hours a day. Engage a Manikarnika Ghat priest (Doms — the hereditary Manikarnika priest community) for Pinda Daan. The Pinda Daan involves offering rice balls (pindas) mixed with til (sesame), barley, and honey, naming each ancestor or category of ancestors with each offering. Offer one pinda for your father's lineage, one for your mother's lineage, and one for all unknown ancestors on both sides. After the offering, immerse the pindas in the Ganga. Do not photograph anything at this ghat — it is a cremation site and absolute respectful silence is required.

Step 8

Akshayavat darshan and Pisach Mochan visit (if needed)

If any family members died in traumatic circumstances — accidents, suicide, violence, sudden death without preparation — visit Pisach Mochan Kund (2 km from the temple) in addition to the main Manikarnika pinda daan. Pisach Mochan is specifically for releasing those who died in traumatic states. The ritual here is simpler — the priest performs a specific mantra sequence and water offering. Then proceed to the Akshayavat (immortal banyan tree, 300m from Vishwanath Temple) for a final offering under the tree, which is the traditional completion of the Kashi Pitru circuit.

Step 9

Kashi Vishwanath darshan

After all ancestral rituals are complete, proceed to the Kashi Vishwanath Temple for darshan of the Jyotirlinga. The new Vishwanath Corridor provides much better access — enter from the Ganga-side entrance. At the main sanctum, after seeing the Jyotirlinga, close your eyes and pray: not for yourself, but for the liberation of your ancestors. Thank Lord Vishwanath (Shiva) for receiving your offering and releasing your family line. Request that the karma carried by the ancestors not pass further to your children and their children. This prayer, made immediately after the Pitru rituals in the same sacred city, is believed to be directly received.

Step 10

Post-ritual observance (11 days)

For 11 days after your Kashi Pitru rituals: light a sesame oil lamp facing south each evening (the direction of the ancestors), offer a small glass of water and a rice ball (you can use cooked rice) at a visible outdoor spot (not inside the house) with the prayer "May all my ancestors receive this with peace and love." Avoid non-vegetarian food for 11 days. Give food to a brahmin, a cow, or a crow on each of the 11 days — all three are traditional recipients of the ancestor's energy on behalf of the living. After 11 days, the Pitru circuit is considered complete and sealed.
