Quick Start
Ready to visit? Here's your immediate action.
- Best day: Tuesday — arrive before 7 AM in blue or dark green
- First stop: Siddhamirtham tank for ritual bath — do not skip
- Book in advance: Vaidyanatha Abhishekam; state the patient's name and condition
- 7 days before: Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra 108 times daily + vegetarian diet
Step by step
Complete Protocol
7 steps · follow in sequence at the temple
Step 1
Determine whether the condition is karmic or circumstantial
Write the name, age, nakshatra if known, and the specific health condition being addressed. Note whether this is a new condition, a recurring pattern, or one that runs in the family — this determines which puja to request. Continue all medical treatment as prescribed; this protocol supports, not replaces, medical care.
Step 2
Prepare for 7 days — dietary and intentional
For 7 days before the visit: avoid non-vegetarian food, alcohol, and tamasic foods. Bathe in cold water each morning. Recite the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra 108 times daily: "Om Tryambakam Yajamahe Sugandhim Pushtivardhanam, Urvarukamiva Bandhanan Mrityor Mukshiya Maamritat."
Step 3
Visit on Tuesday — Angaraka (Mars) day
Vaitheeswaran Koil is particularly associated with Mars (Angaraka) and the Navagraha Mars shrine here is considered the most powerful in South India. Tuesday is the day of Mars. Arrive before 7:00 AM for the first puja. Wear blue or dark green.
Step 4
Bathe in the Siddhamirtham tank
The temple tank (Siddhamirtham — "the nectar of the siddhas") is central to the healing protocol. Devotees take a ritual bath in the tank before darshan. Do not skip this step — it is considered the purification that opens the healing intention. The water is believed to have medicinal properties by tradition.
Step 5
Perform the Vaidyanatha Abhishekam
Book the Vaidyanatha Abhishekam (ritual bathing of the deity) in advance. During the abhishekam, hold the specific health intention clearly — state the name of the person for whom healing is sought, the nature of the condition, and the sincere request for restoration of health.
Step 6
Visit the Navagraha shrine — specifically Mars
After the main darshan, visit the Navagraha shrine and specifically offer to the Angaraka (Mars) image — sesame oil lamps, red flowers, and a brief prayer of release from the karmic health obstacle. This is considered essential for conditions related to blood, injury, surgery, or chronic inflammation.
Step 7
The 48-day post-visit healing practice
The tradition recommends a 48-day (mandalam and a half) post-visit practice: daily Maha Mrityunjaya recitation (minimum 11 times), Tuesday lamp offering with sesame oil, and continued vegetarian diet for the first 21 days at minimum. Donate to a medical charity or support a sick person in need during this period.

Common questions
FAQ
Yes. The tradition explicitly allows proxy visits — one family member visits and performs the protocol on behalf of the sick person. The name and nakshatra of the sick person must be stated during the abhishekam.
The tank is maintained by the temple and is used by thousands of devotees. Standard precautions apply — do not submerge fully if you have open wounds or active skin conditions.

"My father was recovering from a difficult surgery. We visited Vaitheeswaran Koil as the guide described, with the full preparation. His recovery accelerated after that point. Whether it was the temple or coincidence I cannot say — but we are grateful."
