Today is Saturday — especially potent for Navagraha Dosha.

Quick Start
Ready to visit? Here's your immediate action.
- Best day: Saturday during Shani hora (1 hr after sunrise) — arrive before it begins
- First stop: Nala Theertham bath — required before the main puja
- Offer: 19 or 108 sesame oil lamps — purchase from the temple stall
- 19 Saturdays before: "Om Shanicharaya Namah" 108 times each morning
Step by step
Complete Protocol
7 steps · follow in sequence at the temple
Step 1
Identify the primary dosha through jyotish consultation
Before visiting Thirunallar, consult a qualified Jyotish astrologer to identify which Graha is causing the primary affliction. Shani (Saturn) is the primary deity at Thirunallar. If your dosha involves a different Graha, the guide documents which temple in the Navagraha circuit to visit first.
Step 2
Begin the Shani Stotra recitation 19 days before the visit
The number 19 corresponds to Shani's cycle. Begin reciting the Shani Stotra or "Om Shanicharaya Namah" (108 times) each Saturday morning for the 19 days before your visit. Saturday is Shani's day; this initiates the energetic preparation. Keep a small note of each recitation day, because Shani practice rewards steadiness more than emotional intensity.
Step 3
Visit on a Saturday during Shani's hora
Thirunallar is most powerful on Saturdays, particularly during Shani hora (Saturn's auspicious hour — approximately 1 hour after sunrise on Saturdays). Arrive before Shani hora and be inside the temple compound when it begins. If the hora calculation is confusing, prioritize a calm Saturday morning arrival over anxious timing perfection.
Step 4
Offer sesame oil lamps in multiples of 19
The primary offering to Shani at Thirunallar is sesame oil lamps. Offer 19, 38, or 108 lamps — the tradition considers multiples of 19 particularly effective. Purchase the lamps from the temple stall; do not bring your own oil. While lighting each lamp, ask for maturity, patience, and karmic correction, not merely escape from difficulty.
Step 5
Take the ritual bath in the Nala Theertham tank
The Nala Theertham (the tank of King Nala, who was cursed by Shani and freed at this very spot) is the central ritual bath at Thirunallar. Bathing before the main puja is required in the tradition. The lore of Nala is what gives this tank its specific power over Shani-related obstacles.
Step 6
Receive the black sesame prasad
The temple distributes black sesame seeds (nuvvulu) as prasad. Receive and consume these within the temple complex. Do not take them home without consuming at least a portion at the temple. The black sesame is Shani's sacred food.
Step 7
Saturday fasting practice for Shani cycle
The Shani cycle is 7.5 years (Sade Sati) or 2.5 years (Kantaka Shani). For those within these periods, the post-visit practice involves Saturday fasts (taking food only after sunset), recitation of the Shani Stotra, and sesame oil lamp offerings — maintained for the duration of the Shani transit.

Common questions
FAQ
Primarily for Shani. For other doshas, the Navagraha circuit in Tamil Nadu distributes the nine planets across nine temples — Suryanar Kovil (Sun), Vaideeswaran Koil (Mars), Thingalur (Moon), etc. The guide includes the full circuit map.
Sade Sati is the 7.5-year period when Saturn transits the natal moon sign and the signs immediately before and after it. A Jyotish astrologer can calculate this from your birth chart. Many online calculators can provide a rough indication based on birth date and moon sign.

"I was told I was in Sade Sati by three different astrologers. None of them gave me a specific actionable protocol. This guide did. The Thirunallar visit and the Saturday practice have made the period much more manageable."
