Step 1
Confirm your dosha (before you travel)
Have your birth chart examined by a qualified Jyotishi before the visit. Confirm whether you have Rahu-Ketu dosha, Kala Sarpa Yoga, Sarpa dosha, or a combination. The puja type and specific timings at Srikalahasti depend on this. Most priests at the temple can also assess this on arrival, but knowing in advance makes the visit more efficient.
Step 2
Fasting on the day of the puja
Fast from the previous night or from sunrise on the morning of your puja. Water is permitted. Avoid non-vegetarian food for 3 days before the puja. The Rahu-Ketu puja is most powerful when performed in a physically purified state.
Step 3
Ritual bath in Swarnamukhi River
On arrival, go directly to the Swarnamukhi River ghat (200m from the main temple). Bathe in the river before entering the temple. Immerse yourself 3 times while chanting "Om Namah Shivaya." The river bath is considered the first purification step and is mandatory in the Srikalahasti tradition before dosha puja.
Step 4
Engage a temple priest for the Rahu-Ketu puja
Approach the temple Devasthanam counter (main entrance) and book your puja. Specify: Rahu-Ketu Dosha Puja, or Kala Sarpa Dosha Puja. Prices and timings are fixed by the Devasthanam. You will be assigned a personal priest. Give the priest your nakshatra (birth star), rashi (moon sign), and name for the sankalpam (ritual vow).
Step 5
Sankalpam — the ritual vow
At the beginning of the puja, the priest will perform the Sankalpam — a formal declaration of identity and intent before the deity. You must know: your full name, father's full name, your nakshatra and rashi, your gotra (lineage) if known. The priest will chant these while you repeat. This is not a formality — it is the cosmic registration of your request.
Step 6
Sarpa dosha niverana ritual
The priest will perform the Sarpa dosha niverana — a specific ritual involving nagas (serpent figures), specific mantras for Rahu and Ketu, and an abhishekam to the Vayu Lingam. You will be asked to hold a brass serpent figure during portions of the puja. Follow the priest's instructions exactly — sit, stand, pour water, offer flowers as directed. This puja typically takes 45–90 minutes.
Step 7
Main Kalahasteeswara darshan
After the puja, proceed to the main sanctum for darshan of Sri Kalahasteeswara. The oil lamp inside the sanctum — which burns without wind yet whose flame circles clockwise — is the primary visual darshan. Hold the flame in your vision for as long as permitted. This is the Agni darshan, the visible presence of Shiva as Vayu (air/wind).
Step 8
Kanaka Durga shrine visit
The Goddess Gnanaprasunamba (here also called Kanaka Durga) has her own large shrine within the complex. Visit and offer flowers after your Shiva darshan. The Goddess's blessing is necessary to complete the circuit — the Shiva-Shakti balance at this temple is specific and both must be propitiated.
Step 9
Pradakshina (circumambulation)
Walk around the main sanctum clockwise 3 times after both darshans. Then walk around the entire temple complex once. This settles the puja energy into the body and completes the ritual circuit.
Step 10
Post-visit practice (40 days)
Rahu-Ketu puja results consolidate over a 40-day period. For 40 days: avoid non-vegetarian food and alcohol, light a sesame oil lamp on Saturday evenings and recite "Om Rahave Namah" (for Rahu) or "Om Ketave Namah" (for Ketu) 108 times. Donate black sesame seeds or black cloth on a Saturday. The Srikalahasti tradition holds that the dosha is not instantly removed — it is progressively dissolved over the 40-day consolidation period.

Kala Sarpa Yoga occurs when all 7 planets (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn) are placed between the axis of Rahu and Ketu in the birth chart. Rahu-Ketu dosha refers more broadly to afflictions caused by Rahu or Ketu being placed in specific houses (1st, 4th, 7th, 8th, 12th are most significant). A qualified Jyotishi can identify this from your birth chart. The priests at Srikalahasti can also assess it on arrival if you have your birth details.
Saturday is considered the most powerful day for Rahu-Ketu puja. Rahu Kalam on Saturday (1.5-hour window varies by week — check a panchang calendar for the exact time) is the peak window. Ashtami (8th lunar day) and Amavasya (new moon) are also particularly powerful. Avoid performing the puja on Sunday or Tuesday if possible.
