Before you visit Thiruvarur Thyagaraja Swami Temple, avoid the mistakes that waste time, money, and faith

The Thiruvarur Navagraha complex is unique: unlike other Navagraha temples (Suryanar Kovil, Thirunallar, etc.) where each planet has a separate temple, here all nine are within one campus. Begin the circuit from Surya (Sun) at the east, moving clockwise: Surya → Chandra → Chevvai → Budha → Guru → Shukra → Shani → Rahu → Ketu. At each shrine, light a lamp, offer a specific flower (see the Navagraha flower guide in this guide's deep dive), and state the healing petition for the organ governed by that planet. Spend at least 3 minutes at the shrine of your primary planet.

Book the Navagraha Homam or Navagraha Abhishekam at the temple counter in advance (at least 2 days ahead for the homam). The Navagraha Abhishekam involves all nine planet-deities being bathed in sequence with their specific substances: Surya with saffron water, Chandra with cow's milk, Mars with honey, Mercury with sugarcane juice, Jupiter with turmeric water, Venus with ghee, Saturn with sesame water, Rahu with blue flower water, Ketu with kusha grass water. The theertham (bath water) from each deity, after the abhishekam, is collected and mixed — this combined Navagraha theertham is to be consumed by the patient. A small portion should also be applied to the top of the patient's head.

After the abhishekam, walk the perimeter of the Navagraha complex 9 times (once for each planet), counting your steps. At each circuit's completion, offer a small amount of sesame seeds to the nearest Shani shrine (Saturn governs the overall Navagraha energy). If the patient cannot walk 9 circuits, the accompanying family members can walk them on the patient's behalf, holding the patient's photograph or name-written chit during the walk. Total time for 9 circuits: approximately 20–30 minutes.

The Kamalalayam tank (one of the largest temple tanks in India) is directly associated with Thyagaraja's healing energy. If physically possible, take 3 dips in the tank (bathing ghat is on the south side). If dipping is not possible, cup the tank water in your hands and pour it over your head 3 times. The Sthala Purana describes the tank water as having healing properties for systemic disease — specifically conditions involving fluid accumulation (edema, ascites, lymphatic blockage). Tank bathing is most auspicious on Amavasya (new moon) and on the Ther (chariot festival) day.

After returning home, for the next 9 consecutive Mondays: (1) Light a lamp before Shiva's image. (2) Offer raw cow's milk (Soma — the Moon's substance) at the lamp base. (3) Recite the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra 108 times: "Om Tryambakam Yajamahe Sugandhim Pushti-Vardhanam Urvarukamiva Bandhanan Mrityor Mukshiya Mamritat." (4) Apply the milk prasad to the patient's forehead and give a small portion to drink if they consent. 9 Mondays = 9 weeks of consistent activation of the Thyagaraja healing channel established during the temple visit.
