Arunachaleswarar Temple

Deity Lord Shiva (Annamalaiyar) and Goddess Unnamalai Amman

One of the Pancha Bhuta Stalas representing Agni (fire), Arunachaleswarar Temple enshrines Lord Shiva as the sacred hill Arunachala itself. Ramana Maharshi attained enlightenment here. The 217-foot eastern gopuram is among the tallest in South India. The Girivalam — circumambulation of the 14-km Arunachala hill — is performed by millions each full moon for liberation from karma, mental peace, and ego dissolution.

Ritual & Significance

Arunachala is unique — the deity is the hill itself, not just the sanctum image. Pradakshina (Girivalam) of the hill is considered equal to years of intense penance. Performed barefoot on full moon nights, it dissolves deep-seated anxiety, ego blocks, and karmic residue. The Annamalaiyar lingam in the main sanctum, combined with darshan at the Adi Annamalai shrine, is prescribed for mental clarity and the removal of persistent worry that has no identifiable cause.
