Arulmigu Sri Padmanabhaswamy Temple
Sri Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Thiruvananthapuram is the supreme Vishnu temple for wealth, prosperity, and royal protection, and the richest temple in the world — its vaults hold an estimated Rs 1.2–2 lakh crore (over $18 billion USD) in gold, jewels, and artifacts discovered in 2011. Lord Vishnu here reclines in the cosmic Anantha Shayana posture — the eternal divine rest on the serpent Adi Shesha — with the entire universe emerging from his navel. The Travancore royal family, who administered Kerala's largest kingdom for centuries, are the hereditary servants of Padmanabha — the kings ruled as Padmanabha Dasa (servants of the Lord). The Navaratri treasury darshan, the Laksha Deepam (100,000 lamps) festival, and the extraordinary Arattu procession to the sea make this among the most spiritually charged Vishnu temples in existence. Devotees seeking protection of wealth, business security, and abundance come here as the Lord himself is the custodian of the world's greatest treasury.
Ritual & Significance
Padmanabhaswamy Temple operates under a strict darshan protocol unique among major Indian temples: only Hindus are permitted entry, and men must wear dhoti (no trousers or lungis — only the traditional Kerala mundu), and women must wear saree or half-saree (no churidars). This is non-negotiable and enforced at the entrance. The temple opens for six separate darshan windows per day — arrive at least 30 minutes before opening for each window. For business-prosperity purposes, the prescribed ritual is the Sahasranama Archana to Padmanabha (1,008 names of Vishnu chanted with flower offerings) — performed only by prior booking through the Devaswom Board. The most powerful prosperity darshan is during Ekadashi (the 11th lunar day) — both Shukla (waxing moon) and Krishna (waning moon) Ekadashis have special abhishekam and archana. Business devotees traditionally bring account books, business agreements, and partnership deeds here for Devi Puja (offered to Sri Devi and Bhu Devi, the two consorts of Padmanabha, who represent wealth and earth respectively).
