Vishnupad Temple

Deity Lord Vishnu (Vishnupad โ€” the divine footprint)

Gaya is the supreme Pitru tirtha โ€” the single most powerful location in India for ancestral ritual. The Vishnupad Temple houses a 40-cm footprint of Lord Vishnu embedded in solid rock, touched continuously by pilgrims performing Pinda Daan for their ancestors. The Mahabharata, the Vayu Purana, and the Brahma Purana all identify Gaya as the place where performing shraddha (memorial ritual) releases ancestors from pitruloka and grants them liberation. Sri Rama performed Pinda Daan here for King Dasharatha. No other location in India carries this level of Puranic authority for ancestor liberation.

Ritual & Significance

Gaya Shraddha โ€” the ancestral ritual performed at Gaya โ€” is considered the most complete and permanent form of Pitru shanti available. Unlike annual Pitru Paksha observances, a properly performed Gaya Shraddha is believed to release the ancestors permanently and remove Pitru dosha from the entire family lineage for three generations forward. The Pinda Daan sequence at Gaya involves 48 ritual sites (tirthas) spread across the town and surrounding areas โ€” the full sequence takes 3โ€“5 days. Even a condensed visit with Pinda Daan at the three primary sites (Vishnupad Temple, Falgu River bank, and Pretashila Hill) is considered effective.
