Step 1
Set the intention as a couple
Both partners should agree to undertake this protocol together. On a Sunday evening, light a ghee lamp together and make a joint verbal commitment to the practice. If only one partner can participate, the solo devotee carries the intention for both.
Step 2
Undertake a 30-day preparatory practice
For 30 days before the visit, both partners observe: daily prayer to Garbarakshambigai Amman using the Sapthasati (Devi Mahatmyam) or the simpler Lalitha Ashtottara; vegetarian diet; no alcohol; no harsh speech. The 30-day period is considered non-negotiable in this tradition.
Step 3
Visit on a Tuesday or full moon day
Garbarakshambigai Amman is particularly venerated on Tuesdays and during Purnima (full moon). Plan the visit accordingly. Arrive before 8:00 AM for the main darshan. If the couple cannot visit on those days, keep the Tuesday or full moon prayer at home before travel so the timing is still honored.
Step 4
Offer the cradle (tholikkal)
The primary offering at this temple is a small silver or brass cradle (tholikkal), symbolising the intention of a child. These can be purchased at the temple shops. Place it at the feet of the goddess with a clear mental statement of your intention.
Step 5
Receive the sacred vibhuti
The temple provides vibhuti (sacred ash) blessed by the goddess. Both partners should receive and apply it on their foreheads and, according to tradition, the woman should keep a small portion wrapped in a cloth near her sleeping area for 21 days.
Step 6
Complete the Archana in both names
Book the Archana (formal puja with names) in both partners' names and their star signs (nakshatras) through the temple priest. State your intention clearly and honestly when the priest asks. The archana should be treated as the formal naming of the prayer, not a clerical step to rush through before leaving.
Step 7
Post-visit observance: 40 days
The tradition recommends a 40-day post-visit observance: daily lamp, Tuesday fast (fruits only), continuous prayer. The number 40 (mandalam) is considered a complete cycle in this tradition. During this mandalam, the couple should protect sleep, speech, food, and emotional tenderness as part of the offering.
