Step by step
Complete Protocol
7 steps · follow in sequence at the temple
Step 1
Begin as a couple with lineage humility
For 21 days before travel, both partners should avoid harsh speech, non-vegetarian food, alcohol, and arguments about blame. Each evening, light a lamp and chant "Om Namo Bhagavate Nagarajaya" 108 times. Mannarasala progeny prayer is not framed as personal demand; it is a humble request that the family line be permitted to continue with grace.
Step 2
Plan around Ayilyam when possible
Ayilyam nakshatra is especially sacred for Naga worship, and Mannarasala draws deep devotional power on these days. If crowds or travel make Ayilyam difficult, choose a calm weekday morning and keep the same sankalpa. Do not rush the visit, because this temple tradition depends on patient, quiet surrender.
Step 3
Approach Sree Nagaraja and Sarpayakshi together
At Mannarasala, the prayer is offered not only to Nagaraja but also to Sarpayakshi and the serpent mother lineage. Both partners should stand together if possible and state the prayer for a child, pregnancy protection, and removal of unseen lineage obstacles. If only one partner can attend, carry the absent partner name and nakshatra in writing.
Step 4
Perform Uruli Kamazthu through temple guidance
Uruli Kamazthu is the central Mannarasala vow for childless couples. The bronze vessel is placed upright with prayer and then ritually inverted under temple guidance, symbolizing the couple entrusting the child-blessing prayer to the deity. Do not attempt to improvise this rite; follow the poojari and temple counter procedure exactly.
Step 5
Offer Noorum Palum and turmeric with devotion
Noorum Palum, the mixture of rice flour and milk, is one of the temple specific offerings to the serpent deities. Turmeric and tender coconut water are also associated with purification and cooling of serpent-related afflictions. Offer these as a request for removal of sarpa dosha, rahu-related obstruction, and family-lineage blocks to progeny.
Step 6
Receive Mannarasala Amma blessing respectfully
The temple tradition gives special importance to Mannarasala Amma, the female spiritual authority of the shrine. If darshan or blessing is available, approach with silence and humility, not with questioning or pressure. The couple should receive the blessing as a vow, then leave the inner area without immediately discussing outcomes.
Step 7
Return for Uruli Nivarppu after blessing
If blessed with a child, the family traditionally returns to complete Uruli Nivarppu in gratitude. This return is not optional in the devotional logic of the vow; it completes what was entrusted to Nagaraja and Sarpayakshi. Until then, keep a monthly Ayilyam lamp prayer at home and avoid speaking dismissively about the vow.

Common questions
FAQ
Yes. Mannarasala is one of Kerala most revered Naga temples for childless couples, and the Uruli Kamazthu vow is specifically associated with prayers for a child. The tradition treats progeny obstacles as connected with serpent grace, lineage balance, and divine maternal intercession.
Uruli Kamazthu is the temple vow in which a bronze vessel is offered and ritually inverted under temple guidance for couples seeking a child. When the couple is blessed with a child, they return for Uruli Nivarppu, the gratitude completion of the vow. It should be arranged through temple procedure, not privately improvised.
